Kerry County Council's CEO says plans for Killarney and Tralee Municipal Districts could deliver more than 8,000 homes.
Chief executive Fearghal Reidy has also welcomed the adoption of the updated settlements plan for Killarney Municipal District.
He said the plan rezones sufficient residential lands to allow an additional 4,400 (4,415) homes to be built within the Killarney MD.
Councillors unanimously approved the adoption of the settlements plan into to the current Kerry County Development Plan, at this week’s full council meeting.
It sets out a comprehensive local planning framework with policies and objectives, including land use zoning, in the interests of the common good.
The newly adopted plan includes making approximately 95 hectares of land available for new or proposed residential development, and roughly 75 hectares available for employment across the municipal district.
Fearghal Reidy told councillors that the amended settlements plans for Killarney and Tralee Municipal Districts will deliver the capacity for over 8,000 homes.
He said these, together with variations to the plan for the three other Kerry MDs will enhance Kerry’s housing supply and increase the county’s attractiveness as a place to live and work.
Mr Reidy acknowledged the “significant work” of the municipal district’s councillors and planning office.
