Kerry County Council has been accused of letting the people of Castleisland down by not developing affordable housing.
Independent councillor Charlie Farrelly made the statement at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne MD meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Farrelly referenced the recent Castleisland Town Centre First Masterplan public consultation.
This survey sought feedback from local residents, businesses, community leaders and the general public regarding the future development of the Castleisland area.
Cllr Farrelly described the process as highly successful, receiving over 120 submissions from people in the region.
However, he said it spoke volumes that over 50% of the respondents highlighted major concerns with housing in the town.
Adding the responses show first time buyers and young families are being affected by the lack of affordable housing in the area.
Cllr Farrelly said Kerry County Council are letting down the people of Castleisland down when it comes to housing.
He noted that elected members were guaranteed the Local Area Plan for the MD would start during the last council term, however this has gone by the wayside since.
Cllr Farrelly aired his disappointment, adding he understands new legislation has since come in, however it’s holding up development in the town, and that it’s evident that locals are frustrated too given the feedback in the public consultation.
