Concerns raised over planning requirement for short-term lets

The Irish Self-Catering Federation has criticised the obligation that a property must have the appropriate planning permission to get on the new short-term letting register

Currently many operators have been letting properties on a short-tem basis without this planning requirement.

Noelle Casey from Killarney is vice chair of the Irish Self-Catering Federation.

She says there should be exemptions for existing operators who depend on short-term lets for their livelihoods.

Concerns have been raised over delays to the new register for short-term lets, which is due to take effect from May 20th - this date is now in doubt.

Under the plans, short-term lets in towns with a population of over 20,000 must apply for change-of-use planning permission; within Kerry this affects only Tralee.

Noelle Casey says the planning requirements won’t solve the housing crisis, as property owners will not switch to long-term rentals:
