There are concerns that the HSE South West’s hiring freeze will further delay the opening of the Killarney Community Nursing Unit.
That’s according to Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae, who sought clarification on the delayed opening to the unit in the Dáil.
It was reported last week, that the HSE South West, which covers Kerry and Cork, imposed a hiring freeze and tighter spending controls; however, it's understood there'll be no impact on hiring clinical staff.
The news came as the HSE revealed it was €250 million over budget for the first three months of 2026.
The 130-bed unit in Killarney will open on a phased basis, once registration from HIQA is secured.

The Killarney Community Nursing Unit was originally due to open last year, with patients due to be transferred from St Columbanus and the Killarney District Hospital.
Long delays to get the unit opened have been heavily criticised by public representatives and families of potential residents.
Minister of State at the Department of Health with responsibility for older people, Kieran O’Donnell stated it’s a priority for him to get the unit opened.
