It’s understood the company behind the proposed Shannon LNG terminal will seek to create links with education bodies in Kerry.

This was revealed by New Fortress Energy in correspondence to stakeholders, along with notice of its intention to reapply for planning permission.

The move to reapply for permission comes after a delay in developments, following the quashing of an earlier granting of permission by the High Court in 2019.

Last year's Programme for Government ruled out the use of fracked gas; however, it’s being reported that New Fortress Energy is confident it can source gas from non-fracked sources.

It's being reported developers say they are in talks with Munster Technological University in relation to training opportunities and that they "intend to establish connections with Kerry Education and Training Board in respect to apprenticeship".

There was some positive news for the proposed development in recent weeks, when An Bord Pleanála gave Shannon LNG permission to apply for planning as a strategic infrastructure project – this means it can bypass the local authority when seeking permission.

However, the environmental group Friends of the Irish Environment says it can’t understand how an application would be allowed to proceed in June, when a government policy decision in May stated no such projects could proceed until the review of the security of energy supply was complete.

Public consultation on the plan is due to open this week.
