The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council says he’d support a dog DNA database in a bid to tackle dog fouling.
Cathaoirleach and Councillor Michael Foley was speaking as the council launched a campaign targeting the issue of dog fouling.
This DNA database would involve testing of dog foul in a bid to identify the owners.
Over the coming weeks, enforcement officers and litter wardens will patrol problem areas and public amenities to highlight the issue, to advise and caution dog owners, and to issue fines where appropriate.
Cllr Michael Foley says a dog DNA database is a good idea and feels it would encourage people to pick up after their pets.
It could cost €100 for each animal in this database, but Cllr Foley believes this could be added to the cost of fines issued to the owners:
