A couple whose message in a bottle was found in West Kerry 13 years after it was thrown into the sea in Canada, has come to visit the Kingdom.

In September 2012, a couple called Brad and Anita wrote about their trip to Bell Island in Newfoundland, put the note in a bottle and despatched it into the Atlantic Ocean.

After 13 years at sea, the bottle washed ashore at Scraggane Bay on the Maharees, over 3,200km away from where it was first thrown.

Through social media, members of Creative Ireland Neart na Macharaí made contact with Brad and Anita Squires, who are now married with children.

The couple has come to Ireland to see where their message ended up; speaking in Spillane’s Bar in Castlegregory, Brad says it was meant to be that the bottle washed up there.

Anita says the landscape of the Maharees and West Kerry very much reminds her and Brad of where they’re from in Newfoundland.
