Calls for the bereavement grant to be restored as Kerry families struggle to pay for funerals

There are calls for the bereavement grant to be restored, as some Kerry families are struggling to pay for their loved one's funerals.

Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Cahill wants Kerry County Council to write to Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys to raise the issue.

He says the rising costs of funerals and the significant number of deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic need to be taken into account.

Cllr Cahill says he was contacted by people who found it very difficult to pay a family member's funeral and says some people even had to borrow money from friends.
