A councillor has called for Kerry Airport to be named after one of the county’s most revered historical figures.
Kerry Independent Alliance councillor John O’Donoghue has called for the airport to be named after the Liberator, Daniel O’Connell.
O’Connell was born in South Kerry 250 years ago this year, and was instrumental in securing the right of Catholics to become members of parliament under British rule in the 19th century.
Cllr O’Donoghue told the recent council meeting that this would be a great way to welcome people to Kerry and recognise the esteem he’s held in by people in this county.
He said he understands the Kerry brand is important and any name change would have to be suitable for marketing.
Cllr O'Donoghue says this would be fitting to honour Daniel O'Connell.
