Calls for Halloween crackdown on anti-social behaviour as Listowel house allegedly damaged by fireworks

More enforcement and collaboration is needed to tackle anti-social behaviour, including the unauthorised use of fireworks, in the run-up to Halloween.

That’s the view of Sinn Féin councillor Tom Barry, who says a firework was thrown into a house in the town on Sunday evening.

Gardaí confirmed they’re investigating alleged criminal damage to a house by fire in Listowel, and are appealing for witnesses.

Cllr Barry says people are now dreading the lead-up to Halloween rather than enjoying it, due to the prevalence of illegal fireworks, especially in housing estates.

He says that there needs to be greater collaboration between An Garda Síochána and Kerry County Council to enforce the powers they have, especially when anti-social behaviour is in a council housing estate.

Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly, who’s from Listowel, says he will be raising this issue in the Seanad today.

He says adults are targeting the sale of fireworks at children and are making big money out of it, and that needs to be stopped.
