There’s a call for signs to be erected prohibiting the use of drones on the Gap of Dunloe road amid fears horses could be scared by them.
Fine Gael councillor Teddy O’Sullivan Casey made the call at the recent Kenmare Municipal District meeting.
Cllr Teddy O’Sullivan Casey called on Kerry County Council to erect signs prohibiting the use of drones around horses on the Gap of Dunloe road.
He says this is a very important safety measure.
The South Kerry councillor says he was contacted by a member of the public who heard a buzzing sound at the Gap of Dunloe and later realised it was a tourist flying a drone.
Cllr O’Sullivan Casey told the meeting that the person that raised the matter with him, had been around horses all their life and immediately recognised the danger and was afraid drones in this area might spook horses.
The council says regulation of drone use in the state is a function of the Irish Aviation Authority and the council can’t put up signs in areas it doesn’t regulate.
The council says if incidences of inappropriate use of drones are being experienced, then the matter can be reported to the IAA, or to An Garda Síochána if there’s an immediate risk of injury, breach of privacy or security rules or causing a general nuisance.
