Both Killarney and Tralee have improved their ranking in the latest Irish Business Against Litter survey (IBAL).
Killarney is classed as cleaner than European norms, and has climbed to third spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities across Ireland.
Meanwhile, Tralee has regained its clean status and has moved up to 21st position on the list.
The An Taisce report noted that this year saw a superb performance by Killarney, which it notes is similar to previous IBAL surveys.
The report stated tourists visiting the town this summer will appreciate that none of the sites surveyed in the town were heavily littered.
An Taisce says Killarney’s top ranking sites included all approach roads, Kenmare Place, the riverwalk at Killarney National Park and Plunkett Street; it says Plunkett Street had brightly painted premises and lovely ‘olde’ style street signs.
An Taisce says this year saw a very solid performance by Tralee, with seven out of the ten sites surveyed getting the top litter grade – one of the town’s best results in recent years.
The survey recorded a notable improvement at Market Lane, which just missed the top litter grade.
In Tralee the top ranking sites included the town centre car park, Tralee Town Park and The Mall / Bridge Street which An Taisce says all were freshly presented and maintained.
Nationwide, two-thirds of towns were clean, which was up on last year.
