The Diocese of Galway has confirmed that the remains of late Bishop Dr Eamonn Casey have been moved from the cathedral crypt in Galway City.
Calls for the removal of the late bishop's remains from the crypt followed an investigation that revealed sexual assault allegations against the high-profile bishop, who died in 2017.
Bishop Eamonn Casey died in 2017 and was buried in the crypt beneath Galway Cathedral following his funeral.
He was formally removed from public ministry in 2007 by the Vatican, following child sexual abuse allegations.
Throughout his life he denied all the allegations against him and was never convicted of any sexual crimes.
A 2024 RTE documentary examined the Catholic Church's handling of allegations of sexual abuse against the former bishop, and included an
an interview with his niece Patricia Donovan, who claimed ongoing sexual abuse from the age of five.
Following the release of the documentary there were calls to have his remains removed from the crypt and placed in the care of his family.
In a statement issued this morning the Diocese of Galway says that after a period of careful consideration and consultation , the decision was made to remove the remains of the late bishop from the crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven & St Nicholas, following prayers of the dead
It adds that his remains have been entrusted to his family, who have expressed wishes that the arrangements they have made for Bishop Eamonn’s final resting place remain private.
