It’s not yet known how long it will take to repair a high-tech Banna rescue vehicle which was taken on Monday.

The amphibious Argo vehicle is used by Banna Rescue as a rapid response for casualty recovery, with specially designed features allowing it to traverse sand, rocks, and water, while it also has specific steering mechanics.

The vehicle was allegedly taken at around 2pm on Monday, but was recovered a short distance away; it’s believed damage was also caused in the taking of the vehicle.

Gardaí are investigating the theft of the vehicle, which initially cost €40,000 with another €10,000 for its tracks.

Secretary for Banna Rescue, Brian Crean, says the loss of the machine right now with the beach so busy, is immeasurable.

He says it will now have to be sent away to be assessed for damage before it can be certified again for use.

The rescue team were engaging with members of the public about cars blocking emergency access to the beach when the vehicle was taken.

There have been calls for cars that are blocking emergency access to Banna to be clamped, but Brian Crean says education is more important.
