An appeal has been lodged against Kerry County Council’s refusal to grant permission for a tourist and leisure park in South Kerry.
Rínn Rua Holiday Park Ltd sought planning permission to renovate the former Reenroe Hotel in Ballinskelligs, as well as develop a major tourism and leisure park on it grounds.
The Breen family bought the 22.6 hectare former Reenroe Hotel site in 2015; it had been built in the late 1960s but has been idle for over 30 years.
The proposed renovation would have included 22 self-catering apartments, a bar, dining room, and rooftop restaurant.
While the proposed park, overlooking Reenroe Beach, would have included 144 mobile homes, 25 holiday homes, 21 glamping pods, 20 campervan stands, six hobbit huts, and a tent camping area, washroom and facilities.
Rínn Rua Holiday Park Ltd also planned to construct a leisure complex with a swimming pool, a surf shop and café, play area, upgraded cliff walk and beach access.
Last month, Kerry County Council refused planning for the development for reasons including concerns about light pollution, the visually sensitive nature of the area, biodiversity, and water quality and supply.
Rínn Rua Holiday Park Ltd has now appealed Kerry County Council’s refusal.
An Coimisiún Pleanála is due to make a decision on the appeal by the 1st December.
