The Irish Business Against Litter organisation says it’s very disappointed other towns have not followed Killarney’s lead on eliminating single-use coffee cups.
The IBAL survey of coasts and inland waterways, published today, found Ballybunion and Portmagee were moderately littered, and Dingle harbour was littered.
IBAL noted that 42% of litter on beaches or harbours were disposable cups, while bottle caps being attached to the plastic bottles is making a positive difference.
The Killarney Coffee Cup project was launched in 2023 with the aim of making Killarney the first town in Ireland to be free of single-use coffee cups.
IBAL’s Conor Horgan says the government could look again at a levy on takeaway cups, but other areas could also follow Killarney’s lead.
