Animal rights campaigner describes calls for deer bounty in Kerry as populist and crude

An animal rights campaigner says calls made at a Kerry farmers’ meeting for a bounty on deer are populist.

Gerry Boland was responding to the proposals made by Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae and Deputy Michael Cahill, which he describes as unhelpful.

He believes a national deer survey is needed as it’s unknown what the deer population is in the country.

Mr Boland agrees overpopulation of the animal is an issue, but says the introduction of a deer bounty would be crude and unscientific.
