An Post says that there is no backlog of mail in Kerry.
The postal service was responding to a statement made by Sinn Féin TD, Pa Daly.
Deputy Daly highlighted delays people faced for the delivery of their mail, following An Post’s move to its new depot in Tralee.
At the end of August, the new postal base was opened in Tralee, after the sorting facility moved from its previous location at Edward’s Street.
Just under 100 staff from units in Tralee, Listowel, Castleisland, Castlegregory and Ballyheigue relocated to the site of the former BorgWarner facility in Monavalley.
Deputy Pa Daly states that households have faced prolonged delays of their post since the relocation.
He claims due to the backlog, people have missed notifications of important hospital appointments; driving licenses have gone missing; and some standard deliveries are taking much longer than usual.
The Sinn Féin TD says a period of adjustment is required after any move, however, states An Post made a commitment that the backlog would be addressed and it would return to standard delivery goals.
He says if An Post are struggling to keep up and capacity is stretched beyond available resources and staffing, a broader review of the service is needed.
In response, a spokesperson for the postal service told Radio Kerry that it has worked hard to implement necessary changes to the mail structure in Kerry.
They said there have been intermittent disruptions caused by staff issues in recent weeks, which the company apologises for; however, it confirmed there is no backlog of mail.
The spokesperson agrees with Deputy Daly, that an efficient and reliable mail delivery service is essential to any town or village.
An Post added it wants to assure customers in Kerry that changes to the local mails service were completed for exactly this reason.
