€991,600 in funding has been granted to Kerry County Council to refurbish and re-let social housing units.

The funding was awarded through the 2020 Voids Stimulus Programme.

It'll see fifty units brought back into the social housing stock in Kerry.

The Department for Housing, Local Government and Heritage allocated the funding which will help individuals and families who are struggling with homelessness or who are on the social housing list in the county.

Nationally, 2,398 applications from Local Authorities have been approved at a cost of €39.8 million, and the department is anticipating further applications.

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien says he wants to see works carried out and all units allocated by the end of this year.

Minister O'Brien says COVID-19 has had an impact on housing delivery targets this year and is urging Kerry County Council to refurbish and re-let their 50 units as soon as possible.

Fine Gael TD and Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin says this funding means work can begin in Kerry to make vacant units available for people to start a new chapter of their lives.

Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has welcomed the announcement.
