The visitors looked very impressive in the opening quarter and aided by a disputed goal, raced into what looked a significant 1.03 to 0.02 lead after 15 minutes, with Daniel Daly landing two well-taken frees in that spell and Tadhg O’Sullivan also pointing from play. Glenbeigh-Glencar, however, steadied the ship with Liam Smith and Bernard Murphy getting crucial scores from play to settle the hosts. The incessant rain throughout the first half made ball handling extremely difficult despite the excellent condition of the pitch. Glenbeigh-Glencar gradually worked their way back into the contest, with Liam Roche exuding class throughout and contributing two fine points from play. An opportunist goal by full forward Fionn O’Sullivan after a goalmouth scramble gave the hosts real momentum, while Caolim Teahan added two frees to keep the scoreboard ticking. St Mary’s, however, remained dangerous with Conor O’Shea and Alex Coffey both pointing to keep them in touch. At the interval Glenbeigh-Glencar led 1.06 to 1.05.
The visitors regained the initiative early in the second half, with Daniel Daly continuing to punish indiscretions from placed balls, including a superb 2-point free from distance that briefly swung momentum back St Mary’s way. Glenbeigh-Glencar responded through Adrian O’Connor from a free and another composed score from Caolim Teahan, while Liam Roche again popped up with a vital point from play to edge the hosts back ahead.
As the game entered the final quarter, Conor O’Shea struck for a well-finished goal to level matters and set up a tense finish. With the sides deadlocked approaching full time, Tommy Cahill produced a composed and decisive point from play to edge Glenbeigh-Glencar ahead once more. St Mary’s pushed for an equaliser, but the home defence held firm, seeing out a crucial and hard-earned victory.
