From today, everyone will be considered an organ donor unless they opt-out or are included in a so-called excluded group.
These excluded groups are those who have not reached the age of 18, those lacking the capacity to make such a decision, and those who have specifically opted out of donation and registered this decision on the official opt-out register.
Treasa spoke to John Paul Lehane from Gneeveguila, who has twice been the beneficiary of an organ donor transplant.
