Junior was a club man through and through whose list of accolades knows no bounds. While studying in UCC, he acted as secretary and delegate to the county board for the college GAA club. He trained both St Mary’s senior and junior teams to county titles in 1966. He also managed the first South Kerry team that won the first ever U16 County title. Junie taught in St John Bosco’s Secondary School in Cahersiveen from 1968-1999. During this time, he also served many roles in the club - treasurer, county board delegate, field officer and youth officer. He also held the positions of chairman, secretary and treasurer of the South Kerry Bord na nÓg throughout the years. Junior was a Kerry Minor Selector for ten years. He holds South Kerry Championship medals at both minor and senior levels, as well as Cork and Kerry Senior County Football medals.

On Easter Sunday 2001, a mere two years into retirement, Junie launched his book “History of Cahersiveen GAA from 1889 - 1999”. He had spent the previous six years working on the book, gathering the information and the many photos. Junior launched his second book “Cahersiveen: the Town that Climbs the Mountain” on October 30th 2009. His next project was the Daniel O’Connell Summer School which began in 2013 and successfully grew year on year. In October 2016, Junior was awarded an Honorary Master of the Arts by UCC.

A talented and generous man in many, many ways.

We will forever be in debt to Junie for the time, dedication and invaluable expertise he gave to our club. Husband, father, teacher, mentor, author, historian, friend - the list is endless.

In 2018, Junior spoke on Terrace Talk. Have a listen to this.
