At O’Connor Park Chapeltown, Renard bridged a 51 year gap to their last win of the league In 1975 the combination of Renard /Foilmore defeated Valentia in a replayed final. Indeed it is 79 years since Renard on their own shared the league of 1947 when it was run on a league system.

A strong breeze blowing up field to the dressing room end meant it was going to be a game of two halves. Templenoe played with wind advantage for the first half and after a few wides early on eventually opened the scoring when corner forward Michael O’Mahony kicked over a 2 point free out on the wing after 9 minutes. Hugh Granville from play and a 45’ from goalkeeper Mark Looney further extended the lead Before a neat passage of play involving Sean Sheehan and Mark Casey, who passed to Gavan Crowley to kick over a fine 2 pointer from play. That left the score 0-6 to nil after 15 minutes. Shortly after Martin O’Reilly roamed up field to fire over another great 2 pointer after some slack defending by Renard. Mark and Jim Sugrue for Renard and Sean Sheehan and Adrain Spillane were having a great battle in the middle of the field. Aodhan O’Neill and Conor O’Shea in the Renard defence and Mark Casey and Martin O’Reilly in the Templenoe defence were also very involved at this stage. Sean O'Connor for Renard was fouled on a solo run and Sean Teahan opened the scoring for Renard after 20 minutes. John Spillane with the help of the upright pointed before Adrain Spillane set up Mark Casey to extend the lead. Spillane then intercepted a pass and burst through the Renard defence only to fire over a point when one on one with the goalkeeper. John Spillane from play kicked over, before a high ball in to the Templenoe goal caused some panic and one of the Renard forwards was fouled in the square resulting in referee Connie O'Connor pointing to the penalty spot. Up stepped Fintan O’Sullivan to rifle to the net to leave the half time score Templenoe 0-12 to Renard 1-1.

Renard, with a strong wind advantage for the second half, were back in the game. Templenoe opened the scoring in the second half before big Mark Sugrue fetched a kickout in midfield, turned and kicked over a fine 2 pointer. Tomas Kelly and Blaine McCarthy set up Sean Teahan to kick over another 2 pointer to leave the scores 0-13 to 1-5. Renard’s tails were really up now and they were battling for everything all over the field. But credit to Templenoe they battled back and colin Crowley crashed a ball to the net the extend the lead again. Fintan O’Sullivan responded first by kicking over a point from play and soon after Sean O’Connor played a ball into the full forward line and O'Sullivan won it, before cutting in along the end line and firing to net for his second goal of a great contest to leave just 4 points between the teams with 20 minutes remaining. Both sides were battling hard and scores were difficult to come by for the next 10 minutes. Then after a breech Templenoe were awarded a 20 meter free and they extended the lead again only for Renard to respond through a 45’ from Austin Murphy and another from Aodan O’Neill before Murphy with a long rang 2 point free left the bare minimum between the teams with 5 minutes of normal time remaining. It was tit for tat at this time and every ball was been contested with the game in the balance. Sean O’Connor, who was moved to defence at half time, had an outstanding game and burst out of defence before finding substitute William Galvin to kick over the equalising score. Shortly after Renard were punished for some indiscipline and the ball was moved forward the 20 meter for an easy tap over free. Substitute Conor O’Leary then kicked over another equalising score 2 minutes into added time. It looked like the teams were heading for extra time. But just as the clock was ticking down Sean Teahan set up Mark Sugrue to kick over the match winning score. Renard thoroughly deserved the win and amid great jubilation South Kerry Board chairman and Renard clubman Joseph McCrohan presented the Donie Riney Cup to winning captain Conor O’Shea.
