Exchanges were even in the first half, but the visitors scored a timely goal on the stroke of half-time and held the initiative going to the dressing rooms 1-10 to 0-10.

The hosts played scintillating football in the second half and an excellent early goal from Colin McGillicuddy, who with Fionn O’Sullivan dominated proceedings at midfield, levelled the game. Their dominance provided the platform for some scores from the top drawer by the in-form Tommy Cahill and the outstanding Gavan O’Grady, who finished with 0.12, including three two-pointers from placed balls, the pick of them coming late on from well beyond the 45-metre line.

Firies, to their credit, continued to battle throughout and contributed to a very competitive contest, with Pat Daly taking his goal well and James Horan proving a handful around midfield, while Stephen Palmer and Diarmuid O’Mahony were also prominent. Final score 1-21 to 1-18.
