MEP for Ireland South, Seán Kelly, has called for more investment in League of Ireland facilities and coaching, pointing to the success of Kerry FC as proof of the league’s growing popularity.
Speaking at a European Club Association event in Brussels, Kelly highlighted the resurgence of domestic football, noting the sell-out crowds at Mounthawk Park and record-breaking attendances at matches like the Dublin Derby at the Aviva Stadium.
He emphasised the importance of building on this momentum by investing in infrastructure and grassroots coaching development. Kelly also suggested that Erasmus+ funding could play a key role in upskilling coaches and supporting community initiatives to ensure continued growth.
Kelly believes Kerry FC’s rise and the league’s increasing popularity demonstrate that domestic football can thrive with the right support.
