Republic of Ireland lose play off

Ireland's long wait for an appearance at a World Cup finals continues, after their American dream ended last night.

They lost 4-3 to Czechia on penalties in Prague, after the game finished 2-2 following extra time.

Heimir Hallgrimsson's side surrendered a 2-0 lead in the game, with Troy Parrott finding the net from a penalty in the first half.

It was confirmed Sammie Szmodics was unconscious and spent the night in hospital after a nasty collision just moments after coming on.

Ireland will now play North Macedonia in a friendly on Tuesday at Aviva Stadium, after they were beaten 4-0 away to Denmark.

Elsewhere, Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill believes his young side have made progress in getting to the World Cup qualifying play-off semi-finals.

But their hopes of making next summer's tournament are over following a 2-nil defeat away to Italy.

Wales' hopes are over after they lost 4-2 on penalties to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
