Puspure eases into quarter-finals at Tokyo Olympics

Sanita Puspure has underlined her medal potential by easing into the quarter-finals of the women's single sculls rowing at the Tokyo Olympics.

The twice World and European champion had eight seconds to spare over the field in finishing first in her heat this morning.

Phillip Doyle and Ronan Byrne face a repachage tomorrow after disappointing in finishing fourth in their heat in the men's double sculls.

Swimmer Shane Ryan has been forced to withdraw from Sunday's 100-metres men's backstroke due to injury.

Team Ireland say the former world medallist has been suffering from "persistent shoulder pain".

He's still due to swim in two other events next week.

Boxing duo Kellie Harrington and Brendan Irvine will carry the Irish flag for the Games' opening ceremony this lunchtime.

The stadium will be without supporters due to COVID-19 restrictions and organisers have promised a "solemn" event when it gets underway at midday Irish time.
