Jason O'Connor reports
Easter Sunday morning saw the Munster Matchplay Qualifiers take place in Deerpark with spots on offer for the three Mens grades over 36 holes of Strokeplay.
Tralee’s Jason Cregan is automatic for the Senior Mens event as defending champion as he chases three-in-a-row overall with the player he beat in last year’s all Kerry decider, Deerpark’s Damien Fleming topping the scoresheet on Sunday with a total of 15 under par. Claiming the other four Senior spots where Tralee club-mates Michael Conway and Jason O’Regan who both had 12 under while County Senior Matchplay runner-up Darren Goodall finished on nine under par.
Gavin Carroll would then claim the final Senior spot on three under as in the Intermediate grade, Mark O’Regan’s total of five under would have been good enough to join his father in the senior ranks. Bobby McCarron’s four under par was also a good enough senior score on the day as well in securing the second Intermediate spot as both Mark and Bobby join County Intermediate Matchplay winner Mark Lucey (Tralee) in the finals.
The Junior grade meanwhile saw five over par as the leading score with both Paddy Murphy of Deerpark and Reece Sugrue of Tralee attaining that total. Noel Lee claimed the other spot with seven over as these three join County Junior Matchplay winner Mark O’Shea in the Munster Finals draw. These Finals will be played in Douglas in Cork on the weekend of May 10th and 11th next.
We have a slight lull in the calendar until after the May Weekend as Castleisland announced last weekend the decision to postpone their Scratch Cup events scheduled for the May Bank Holiday Monday until a later date pending approval from Pitch & Putt Ireland.
The Tim Scannell Memorial Inter-Club Matchplay will be getting underway from Tuesday May 6th next.
