He qualified for his home race ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri who will be alongside him on the front row.
Carlos Sainz was third with Britain's Lando Norris fourth and George Russell fifth.

World champion Max Verstappen was only sixth fastest after he hit a wall and Lewis Hamilton qualified seventh.
