They go above second-placed Burnley on goal difference, and five points clear of fellow automatic promotion hopefuls Sheffield United - who lost 2-1 to bottom team Plymouth.
Chris Wilder's side have now suffered three straight defeats, while the result moves Argyle two points from safety.
