The Cougars were on the road last evening to University Limerick to take on the Limerick Sport Eagles and an entertaining high scoring game saw the home side take the points moving to joint top League leaders. The Cougars started well and led 10-7 in the early stages but the home , Esebio Strijdhaftig and Tommy Bowler baskets put the Cougars ahead. Coach made the changes from the bench to get the Eagles into the game and they started to find the range through Manny Peyton and Nikola Invokic to get the home support going to lead 25-18.
A fast tempo to the second quarter as the sides went basket for basket with Esebio Strijdhaftig, Andrew Fitzgerald and Tommy Bowler doing well for the Cougars with the home side just doing enough to maintain the lead at half time 47-40 . The home side took control of the game in the third quarter with a spread of three pointers six in total as a tiring Cougars failed to keep pace despite good play and scores by Jack Lynch and Darren Townes as Eagles went into a commanding lead 73-51. Cougars responded well in the early stages of the final quarter through American Darren Townes but the home side were to finish the stronger with Cougars good first half efforts taking its toll on the second half performance with the Eagles bench well able to maintain their intensity. On going improving signs for the Cougars with a Cup meeting next Saturday with Ulster University at the Pres Gym an exciting prospect.
