Team Flexachem Killorglin were beaten in the Men’s Superleague, going down 82-73 to Belfast Star.
The game tipped off, with the 1st quarter being a tame enough affair. Jordan Blunt and Eche Okeke opened the scoring for the home team and by the end of the quarter the scoring was 19-17 in favour of Belfast Star.
Team Flexachem’s Benni Fungala had a good 2nd quarter with 5 inside 2’s including a dunk. Along with a couple of 2’s from Jordan Blunt this kept the score board ticking over nicely but Belfast matatched this with scores from Conor Quinn and Max Cooper and at the end of the quarter the score stood at 34-33 with the Northern outfit holding onto a slender lead.
The 3rd quarter once again was a tight affair. Killorglin’s big centre Ron Elksnis had to be benched early in the proceedings after picking up his 4th foul of the game. This coupled with the fact that Killorglin’s other big centre Nathaniel Powell was also benched early in the game with a knee injury left the home side under pressure on the defensive side of things. Three late inside scores by Belfast’s big man Max Cooper saw the Lagan siders open up a 4 point lead at the end of this quarter on a score line of 56-52.
Early 3 pointers in the 4th quarter by Belfast’s Maurice Jones and Max Richardson matched only by a 2 point score by Killorglin’s Blunt saw Belfast push their lead out to 8 points.
The home team were now guilty at this stage of missing a lot of outside attempts while the away team were picking up 2 point scores and saw them take advantage and extend their lead.
By the end of the final quarter of the game Belfast Star had pushed their lead to 82-73 and that’s how the game finished.
Best on the night for team Flexachem were Benni Fungala on 23, Eche Okeke on 20 and Jordan Blunt on 15.
