Kerry racing news

It was hard to know which horse was the star of the show before the Bluegrass Racehorse Cube Chase at Down Royal on St Patrick’s Day. Was it last year’s Aintree Grand National hero Nick Rockett or Gerri Colombe, the five-time Grade 1 winner?

Either way, it was the latter which had race fitness on his side as he breezed to a five-length margin at odds-on 8-13 favourite in the colours of Robcour worn by Jack Kennedy.

“It was straightforward enough. He jumped well. He enjoyed that better ground and it’s nice for him to get his head in front again,” Kennedy said.

“He keeps a bit more himself, he was idling in front. We might see him at Aintree next either in the Grand National or the Betfair Bowl [which he won in 2024].

“I will leave that decision to Gordon [Elliott, trainer] and the owners.”

Gerri Colombe is a 25-1 chance for the Aintree showpiece on Saturday, April 11.
