Athea trainer Eoin McCarthy got the year off to a good start when 15-8 favourite Kilbrin Rocco had a couple of lengths to spare at the end of the 2m handicap chase at Clonmel on Thursday last. The winner had gone close at Limerick’s Christmas fixture and jumped to lead inside the final fence in the hands of Gary Noonan. The Newcastle West rider was enjoying the last winner before his 3lbs claim went and he is now in the fully-fledged professional ranks.
Santo Sospir, trained by Gordon Elliott, made it three wins from four starts in the 2m1f Munster Hurdle at Clonmel on Thursday last. As his form records might suggest, this looks a pretty useful horse and the 4-5 favourite came home nine lengths clear, eased down by Jack Kennedy. The task was made easier by the departure at the penultimate flight by Willie Mullins’ second favourite Charlus when attempting to rally.
Fethard trainer Mouse Morris prepared Banter At The Bar to land the opening race at Punchestown on Sunday, the beginners’ chase over 2m6f. Listowel jockey Gavin Brouder had the JP McManus gelding, a 12-1 chance, in front and travelling best on the swing from home and the pair maintained the momentum for a five-length margin. It was the winner’s first run over fences and the impression was that it might not be his last, especially if he stretches out further in distance.
