Jason O’Connnor reports on the Third Round of the Tim Scannell Matchplay event
Last Sunday saw the Group Stages of the Tim Scannell Memorial Inter-Club Matchplay (sponsored by Spar Market St, Listowel) come to a conclusion as it turned into a lockout of the four semi-final positions by the Tralee club.
Their 1, 2, 3 and 5 sides have made it through to the last four as the 2, 3 and 5 teams emerged as the three Group winners with their 1 team piping Deerpark 3 for the best runners-up spot. Tralee 5 did lose their final game to Listowel B 3.5-2.5 but had enough in hand to finish ahead of Deerpark 3 who were 4-2 winners over Castleisland 1 in their final Group game.
Group 2 was all about the meeting of Tralee 1 and 2 with 1 ahead in the table in advance of tee-off. Tralee 2 won the match 4-2 overall however to finish ahead of them in the table as Tralee 4 concluded their campaign with a 4.5-1.5 win over Listowel A as they finished third in the Group. Group 3 saw Tralee 3 finish as the only side with a 100% record as they defeated Castleisland 2 by 3.5-2.5 while the Deerpark derby between their 1 and 2 sides also finished 3.5-2.5 to their 1 side.
In terms of the best runner-up Tralee 1’s overall match difference of +2 was better than Deerpark 3 (+1) and Deerpark 2 (0) in the other groups. Last Sunday afternoon’s draw for the semi-finals this Sunday meanwhile saw Tralee 2 drawn against Tralee 5 and Tralee 1 drawn against Tralee 3.
Full details of the semi-finals will be confirmed prior to the weekend with the final set for Easter Sunday April 5th.
