Monaghan had the first two points, both inside 4 minutes. Paudie Clifford halved the deficit, then brought the sides level in the 10th minute. Monaghan went back in front at 3 points to 2. They led 4 to 2 at the midway point of the half. A Keith Evans point cut the gap in half after 20 minutes. Joe O'Connor pointed the equalise in the 24th minute. A third Kerry point in succession had the Kingdom in front, Paudie Clifford the scorer after 28 minutes. There was no further scoring in the half.
Sean O'Shea doubled the Kerry advantage early in the second period. The Kingdom made it double scores at 8 points to 4. It was 10 to 6 with quarter of an hour to go. Tadhg Morley put Kerry 5 clear. Sub David Clifford's 2 pointer had the Kingdom 7 up. Clifford then nabbed the opening goal of the encounter to make it 1-13 to 6 points. Kerry won by 14.
