Kate O'Connor closing in on medal

Kate O'Connor will have the chance to secure Ireland's first medal at the World Indoor Championships in 19 years, this afternoon.

The European champion is in the bronze medal position in the women's pentathlon ahead of the concluding 800-metres race later.

O'Connor had two personal best leaps in the long-jump to remain in contention for a podium finish after strong showings in the shot put, high-jump and 60-metres this morning.

Sophie O'Sullivan ran a lifetime best but didn't advance from her heat in the women's 15-hundred metres while a third place finish in his heat wasn't enough to see Andrew Coscoran advance in the men's 15-hundred either
