Freak injury forces Kvitova out of French Open

Petra Kvitova has been forced to withdraw from the French Open.

The eleventh seed sustained an ankle injury after Sunday’s press conference that followed her first round win.

Kvitova will focus her attentions on getting fit for the grass court season.

Rafa Nadal is safely through to round 2 at the French Open.

The thirteen-time champion beat Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 and will play the experienced Richard Gasquet (pr: Ree-shar Gass-kay) in the second round.

However, seventh seed Andrey Rublev is out - beaten in five sets by Jan-Lennard Struff.

Later tonight, Novak Djokovic goes up against the world number-66 Tennys Sandgren.

Elsewhere today, top seed Ashleigh Barty needed three sets to beat world number-70, Bernarda Pera.

Also victorious were women’s fifth seed Elina Svitolina, Australian Open finalist Jennifer Brady and Ons Jabeur.
