It's understood Michael Carrick is having detailed discussions with Manchester United today about becoming interim boss until the end of the season.

The club's hoping to make a decision before players return for training on Wednesday ahead of their weekend Premier League meeting with Manchester City.

United exited the FA Cup yesterday following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer was also linked with the interim job but it's believed Carrick is the club's preference after initial talks were held last week.

Former Ireland international Conor Hourihane takes his Barnsley team to Anfield for a third round tie with Liverpool in the FA Cup tonight.

The visitors currently sit in 17th in the League One table, with Hourihane in charge of the club on a permanent basis since the April of last year.

Kick off is at 7.45.

The draw for the fourth round will also take place this evening.
