The American carded 12 birdies - four of them on the last four holes - and no bogeys.
He completed just the 16th round of 59 or under in PGA Tour history, to set a clubhouse lead of 14 under par.
Padraig Harrington is two-over-par and Paul McGinley is three-over-par ahead of today's third round at the Senior Open.
Harrington's defence of the title took a severe blow yesterday as he followed up his opening day 70 with a two-over-par round of 72.
