In 1980, John O’Mahoney from Scartaglen and his two colleagues Privates Thomas Barrett and Derek Smallhorne were serving as Irish UN peacekeepers when they were kidnapped and tortured in Lebanon. Privates Barrett and Smallhorne were murdered and Private O'Mahony was fortunate to survive. Last December, Mahmoud Bazzi was sentenced to 15 years for the two murders. John O'Mahony and Private Thomas Barrett’s daughter Karen Barrett-Moynihan, who lives in Rathmore, spoke to Treasa:
