Yesterday, a group of media and invited guests took to the skies in a helicopter - which will next week begin bringing staff to a rig over 200 kilometres off the Kerry coast to explore for oil and gas.
If the exploration by the company CNOOC International is successful, it’s claimed it could lead to the creation of hundreds of jobs in the county.
The company has chosen to fly experts from Aberdeen to Kerry Airport who will then be transported to the highly specialised rig by a helicopter.
Flights are due to begin next week.
Radio Kerry journalist Aisling O’Brien was among the group at Kerry Airport yesterday.
She began by speaking with Martin Craggs who is Operations and Base Manager with Babcock – the company which is providing the helicopter to transport staff to the rig in the Porcupine Basin.
