Words Matter

Words Matter: Exploring the Power of Words Words Matter is a new series produced by the Kerry College/Radio Kerry students of Journalism, Podcasting & Radio, exploring the power of words - the ones that shape us, stay with us, hurt us, inspire us, and help define who we are. The idea for the series grew from a simple but timely question: Why do words matter? In an age where public figures, social media users and everyday conversations can often be filled with harsh language, criticism and division, the series asks listeners to reflect on the impact words can have - for good and for bad. Across a collection of dramas, reflections and personal stories, contributors explore the words they wish they had said, the words they can never forget, the words that hurt, the words that heal, and the words that helped shape who they became. From stories of loss, recovery and resilience, to reflections on kindness, culture, identity, language and belonging, each episode offers a unique perspective on the power of words and the lasting impact they can have on our lives. The series also became a conversation with listeners. As part of the project, a number of students appeared on Radio Kerry's ‘Kerry Today’ programme to discuss the idea behind Words Matter and invite people to share their own experiences. The response was positive, with listeners getting in touch to tell their stories and contribute to the series. Among those who responded was Tralee man Ruadhan Hennessy. His contribution, One More Chance, opens the series with a powerful reflection on his late father and the words left unsaid.

Together, these stories remind us that words are never just words. They can heal, inspire, challenge, comfort, divide, connect and stay with us long after they are spoken. In the end, words matter because people matter.
