This week on Ours to Protect we’re taking a look at plans to make Killarney the most sustainable destination in the country.

The proposal was launched at a packed meeting organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce last week.

Over 70 guests from the tourism and business communities in Killarney attended the very first Sustainable Killarney event organised by the town’s Chamber of Tourism and Commerce last week.

Fáilte Ireland was there to launch their new Climate Action Programme which aims to decarbonise the tourism sector.

The meeting also heard that Killarney plans to be the first town in Ireland to provide community-wide energy monitoring, solar generation and benchmarking.

It aims to be the largest Electric Vehicle charged destination in the country.

How is that going to happen?....

Mike Stack, managing director of Tricel, is chair of the Chamber’s sustainability committee.

Tom Randles, is the general Manager of Randles Hotel and he’s a member of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

He says there are changes the tourism sector needs to make.

Tom says the business community in the town is backing the plan.

Cllr Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Killarney, said there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make Killarney more sustainable.

Paul O’Neil from the O’Donoghue Ring Collection is also a member of the Chamber’s sustainability group. He said he was hoping to learn from some of the speakers at the event.

Kevin Leahy of the Blacksheep Hostel and Café was a guest at the event. He would love to see Kerry become carbon neutral.

Killarney hopes to be the leading town in sustainability by 2030.
