What Smell Best Represents Ireland in 2025? – April 23rd, 2025

Twenty-five years ago, Irish people chose peat as the smell that best represents this country. What aroma would we nominate today? Last evening the film, ‘Ireland and Its Aromatic Heritage’ received its world premiere in Tech Amergin, Waterville. The film is directed by US artist Dr Gayil Nalls who’s the creator of the World Sensorium Project. In 2000, she asked people to nominate smells that best represent their culture. Twenty-five years on, she has returned to the project and once again is seeking to identify and preserve natural scents that best capture a country or culture’s heritage. The project, a Millennium initiative at the start of the century, has been relaunched to explore whether people’s choices have changed since 2000. You may vote for your favourite smell or aromatic plant in Ireland here:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIqbQVZLolW-pj3PjwjOsm0kaMCbbkXxDVdFwoFjww6UsO-A/viewform

Dr Anita McKeown of Future Focus 21c and SMARTlab Skelligs and June O’Connell of Iveragh Inspires are involved in the World Sensorium Project.
