In 1861, the owner of Muckross House, Henry Arthur Herbert welcomed Queen Victoria and his family into her home. That visit kickstarted tourism in Kerry. Henry Arthur Herbert embodied the Anglo-Irish establishment – the Kerry MP had served as Chief Secretary for Ireland. But was he descended from a slave of African origin? US genealogist Mario Valdes believes so.
