On June 3rd, 1944 Maureen Sweeney celebrated her 21st birthday. The young woman who was from Knockanure had moved to County Mayo to work in the weather station at Blacksod. On that day, she forecast an impending storm and this information was passed on to the Allies who were planning to invade France which was under Nazi control. Her forecast delayed the D-Day landings by one day; a decision which helped secure victory for the Allies. Maureen, whose maiden name was Flavin, passed away yesterday, in her 101st year. Jerry spoke to Maureen’s grandson Fergus Sweeney.
