The quintessential figure of Empire, Horatio Lord Kitchener, was born and spent his childhood in North Kerry. He remains a controversial figure for the ‘scorched earth’ policy he deployed against the Boers when they rebelled against the British in South Africa. He also used concentration camps to house the displaced Boer families. A sign at Aghavallen Graveyard in Ballylongford, which has been erected for many years, notes that he was brought to the church there to be baptised. Kerry Today received reports that a separate plaque, solely dedicated to Lord Kitchener was erected last Friday but was removed the following day. Jerry speaks to Cllr Michael Foley who’s chair of Aghavallen Graveyard Committee. The committee had been unaware of the recent alleged activity.
