In the 1980s, a group of Dunnes Stores workers went on strike because they refused to handle goods produced by apartheid South Africa. Karen Gearon, who now lives in Kerry, was one of those campaigners. She has spoken out in support of another group of retail workers involved in a struggle today – staff at Debenhams, including those who worked at the company’s Tralee branch. Today protests took place outside Debenhams’ liquidators, KPMG. Former staff have been picketing Debenhams outlets for months calling for what they describe as a fair redundancy package.
