Planning was first granted in 2006 for a liquefied natural gas terminal – Shannon LNG – on the Tarbert Ballylongford landbank on the Shannon Estuary. However, the project has been beset by delays including concerns over the environmental impact of such a development including the possible use of fracked gas. Recently, the Government announced a freeze on LNG terminals pending an energy supply review. However, the project’s US backers New Fortress Energy is submitting a new plan. Jerry speaks to Fine Gael councillor Jim Finucane and to John Fox of the Tarbert Development Association – both support the project.
